A little puppy love goes a long way

A lot of things Olivia or I do generate an exasperated expression from Claus. It’s his patented disgusted look. In hearing the story about my real husband, my work husband Paul laughed and said, “We dads go to school for that.”

I was telling Paul a story about Kali the neighbor’s dog, and how we often invite Kali over to visit during the day so she’s not lonely while her family is at work.

It was driving Claus nuts because he thinks we’re promoting co-dependence. If we never let Kali learn independence, we’re enabling her. She’ll never leave the house and get a job when she turns 21.

And then! Kali, that sneaky dog! She cuddled right up on Claus one day and won him over. He’s more lenient now because she’s so sweet to him.

The following photos tell the story better than words:

Claus comes into to find Kali on the bed.

Unbeknownst to him, I snap a candid of his typical Tired Dad face.

Claus gives up and joins us, and the dog licks him and lays down on him. Hmm, someone is finally smiling.
